Halldór Ásgrímsson
Halldór Ásgrímsson, former Icelandic Prime Minister, is the new Secretary General for the Nordic Council of Ministers as of 1 January 2007. Halldór Ásgrímsson is looking for Nordic co-operation to be closer to Nordic citizens and their everyday lives.
Ásgrímsson attaches importance to the Nordic Council of Ministers focusing on both the east and the west. There must be ventures in the West Nordic Region, but also in the Baltic Sea Region.
Halldór Ásgrímsson has been a politician for 32 years, most recently as Prime Minister in Iceland. He has taken part in all the Nordic Council’s Sessions during the last 30 years, except for 1979. He has previously been both Minister of Fisheries and Foreign Minister. He takes a positive view of the EU and is interested in closer co-operation between the Nordic countries and the EU.
