About the Secretariat

The Nordic Council Secretariat prepares and follows up on the issues discussed by the Presidium, and by its committees and other organs.

The Nordic Council Secretariat is located in Copenhagen, where it shares premises with the Nordic Council of Ministers' Secretariat.

The Nordic Council Secretariat prepares and follows up on the questions that are discussed in the Nordic Council's management organ - the Presidium - and in the various specialist committees.

This is done in consultation with the secretariats for the Party Groups and the national delegations.

Together with the host nation's delegation secretariat, the Nordic Council Secretariat prepares and organises the two annual meetings - the Theme Session in the spring and the Ordinary Session in the autumn and is responsible for their minutes.

The host nation's secretariat organises other meetings throughout the year, in consultation with the Nordic Council Secretariat.

The Secretariat's rules are determined by the Presidium, which also formally appoints Secretariat staff.

The Secretariat's day-to-day work is managed by the Secretary General, who has some 15 members of staff from the Nordic countries and the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.

The Council Secretary General is also responsible for the work in the Presidium, with the help of two members of staff.

Linked to each committee are one or two members of staff who are responsible for preparing, implementing and following up on the committee's work.

The Secretariat is also responsible for the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC).

The Nordic Council has a joint Communications Department with the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The Council of Ministers' Department for Administration and Law (AJ)
is responsible for human resources, financial matters and office services at the Secretariat to the Nordic Council.
