Nordic Council Theme Session 23 March 2012 in Reykjavik.

The Arctic is the theme when the Nordic Council gathers at its first annual theme session on 23 March in Iceland. The plenary debate, which will highlight Arctic issues such as the environment, gender equality and welfare perspective, will be sent live on the Internet from the Althingi in Reykjavik.

The many and complex political challenges in the Arctic are one of three themes of the Finnish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2012.

A key issue is promoting development that ensures good living conditions for the people who live in the Arctic. It is about finding a balance between the rights of the local people and the needs and protection of the area's vulnerable nature. This is important because there is a growing global interest in exploiting natural resources in the Arctic region and an increasing interest in the use of future Arctic transportation routes. All in all, the Arctic involves a number of stakeholders both nationally, regionally and globally.

For the first time, the Nordic Council's Literature Prize will be announced and presented in conjunction with the theme session. The award ceremony will take place on 22 March.

The Nordic Council's theme session on the Arctic will take place after the March meetings 21 - 22 March.
