Session 2009

The theme of the Nordic Council's Session 2009 in Stockholm was the Nordic Region and the EU, and made a strong impression at the summit meeting between the prime ministers and the leaders of the opposition, and the MPs' proposals to the governments.

The Stoltenberg report on closer co-operation in defence and security policies was also a central theme in the debate. The foreign ministers said, amongst other things, that the discussion on Nordic foreign and defence policies was more interesting and dynamic than it had been for many years.

The prime ministers made it clear than green growth, Nordic top-level research and new initiatives on the climate, the environment and energy are the way forward in Nordic co-operation, and mean that globalisation ventures must continue to have the highest priority.

Amongst other things, the politicians in the Nordic Council agreed during the Session to support zero tolerance for drugs in the region. They also focused on issues of consumer policy and requested the Nordic Council of Ministers to open a Nordic information office in Belarus.

The Icelandic Social Democrat, Helgi Hjörvar was elected as new President of the Nordic Council with effect from January 2010. Hjörvar indicated that he will focus on security in the broad sense - fighting organised crime and trafficking, economic co-operation and climate issues, in addition to the more traditional security issues in line with the Stoltenberg report.
