This report describes various laboratory use purposes in which ozone depleting substances are used, difficulties encountered when substituting substances, and information on possible alternative methods.
The report is based on the results of the project The use of ozone depleting substances in laboratories – ODSLAB". In the project the use of ozone depleting substances in laboratories was evaluated in the Nordic countries. Questionnaire was the principal survey method.
In 2001, 17.4 tons (ODP*) of new ozone depleting substances were used for laboratory purposes. 75 % of ozone depleting substances were used for oil-in-water –assays, which was prohibited in 2002.
Based on the questionnaire, it was estimated that the use of ozone depleting substances for laboratory and analytical purposes in the Nordic countries will be less than 1.5 tons (ODP) in 2003. Even further substitution is possible for most purposes. However, based on the questionnaire information, substitution is typically comprehended impracticable or expensive.
