Faroe Islands' flag

The national flag of the Faroe Islands, also called Merkið, is based on the Danish Dannebrog. The flag was designed by Faroese students in Copenhagen and was raised for the first time on the Faroe Islands in 1919. However, it was first recognised during World War II on 25 April 1940 by Great Britain. The white base colour symbolises the clear sky and the froth on the top of the waves that lap against the beach. The red and blue colours are found on the traditional Faroese scarf and are also a recognition of the affiliation between Iceland and Norway, whose flags use the same colours.
