The Nordic Master Programme

The Nordic Master Programme consists of degrees run jointly by up to three Nordic countries. The study programmes are all in English. It is a service that the countries would not be able to provide on their own.

Mobility and quality are the watchwords. The Nordic Master Programme provides students with degrees of a high academic standard, helps promote the goal of a single Nordic education area and encourages freedom of movement for knowledge between the countries.

During the two-year programme, students have the chance to live and study in at least two Nordic countries.

A raft of opportunities

All the study programmes are in English and are prescribed to a minimum of 120 ECTS credits. The 25 joint programmes to date have varied greatly in terms of disciplines: from marine studies and engineering to glass blowing and management in the culture sector.

Satisfied students

Questionnaires and interviews reveal high levels of student satisfaction with the programme. In 2012, no fewer than 93% of respondents said that they would recommend it to others. The mobility aspect is a particular draw and was identified as something that attracted them by 70% of the students.

The programmes has been popular with students form the Nordic Region and from other parts of the world. About 40% of the current cohort are from the Region, 20% from the rest of Europe and 40% from further afield.

How is a new Nordic Master degree set up?

Consortia of at least three Nordic higher education institutions apply to the Council of Ministers for up to DKK 1.5 million to launch a new degree. One of the institutions acts as co-ordinator and at least two others act as partners.

The Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) in Finland deals with the administrative side of the programme.

The next round of applications is scheduled for spring 2017.
