United Against Food Waste Nordic

United Against Food Waste Nordic works at minimizing food waste through a series of public events and social media activies.

The primary objective of United Against Food Waste Nordic is to put food waste on the agenda through events in the Nordic region. The aim of the initiative is also to provide knowledge about food waste to the Nordic consumers as well as the entire value chain for food, including food manufacturers, industries and retailers, adequate organizations and politicians.

The Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) is supporting the UAFWN and working together with a long list of contributors in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The national information offices of the NCM, Norden i Fokus, are partners in the national events and funding has been granted through the Nordic Prime Ministers' green growth initiative on food waste.

Nordic food waste events

During the summer of 2014 each Nordic country will host an event with the primary target to inform the public about the excessive amounts of food waste.

The aim is to unite as many stakeholders as possible to minimize food waste, locally as well as globally! The series of events started in Denmark 2013.

The events in 2014 will take place on the following dates:

  • Sweden (June 3rd and November 25th)
  • Iceland (September 6th and medio November)
  • Finland (September 11th)
  • Norway (September 18th and October 21st)
  • Denmark (September 6th and October 9th)

United Against Food Waste is an international event campaign initiated by the Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark (Stop Spild Af Mad) - Denmark's largest non-profit consumer movement against food waste and supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Competition

In August 2014 a competition was launched to promote good practices to minimize food waste and provide good advice to consumers in the Nordic countries and elsewhere. More details here - see photos on facebook.

Nordic-Baltic ad competition

In 2013, the NCM along with the UN office in Brussels held a Nordic-Baltic ad competition on food waste that was part of the ThinkEatSave campaign of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Here graphic designers from the Nordic-Baltic region were asked to illustrate the problem of food  food waste visually. On the basis of the best entries, an exhibition was made that has since toured the region. The posters have been shown all over the world via UNEP and they were also exhibited at the EU Commissions' Green Week in June 2014.
