About the Sustainable Nordic Welfare Programme

The Nordic welfare model has received favourable attention internationally in recent years. The ability to combine economic growth and dynamism with generous and tax-funded welfare has proven its strength during the economic crisis. However, the Nordic welfare system is under pressure. Globalisation, economic crisis, demographic changes and technology, as well as new values in the population, are challenging the countries' opportunities to maintain and further develop the welfare societies and welfare services.

The Nordic Region must still be able to offer sustainable welfare in the future.

Sustainable Nordic Welfare is the Nordic Council of Ministers' programme for new welfare solutions. The programme, which covers the period 2013-2015, initiates co-operation in tangible measures as well as Nordic platforms for dialogue and exchange of knowledge.

Sustainable Nordic Welfare complements the Nordic countries' national efforts to renew welfare. An important part of the work of the Nordic Council of Ministers is to open up for exchange of experiences and learning between the Nordic countries.

The aim of the programme is to help education lead to work, for access to health and care skills to match the needs, and to ensure good quality in health care.

Sustainable Nordic Welfare will be implemented through tangible measures and activities in three focus areas:
