The Nordic Council of Ministers invites you to dialogue on the interconnection between Gender Equality, Green Economy, Welfare and Climate. The seminar is envisaged as an inclusive and interactive forum. It will gather academia and also a panel bringing together politicians from different regions of the world and the young generation.

Any serious shift towards sustainable development requires the use of women’s resources and talents.

Sustainable development can not be achieved without equality between women and men. To make a change everybody has to be part of the equality project, this includes men and women, boys and girls. This seminar aims to reaffirm the criticality of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the achievement of sustainable development in its three dimensions – economic, social and environmental. Social and economic discrimination affecting women is a great hindrance toward economic growth and development worldwide.

The seminar aims to increase global awareness of the link between women’s economic contributions and sustainable development. The message is that any serious shift towards sustainable development requires the use of women’s resources and talents. To make this come true there is a need to develop national welfare structures like education, health care, care for children and the elderly in order to ensure women’s full participation in work and society.

Specific focus areas

The seminar will open with presentations highlighting issues and challenges related to the position of women, the Nordic welfare model and sustainable development.

The interactive multi-stakeholder exchange and discussions will give examples of countries that stand out because of recent sustainable and equitable development.

It will look upon:

(1) differences and common elements as their meeting point, in order to develop a fruitful exchange on politics and strategies. These elements could be the gender equality project, equal distribution, sustainable economy, and welfare. How and in what way are these elements necessary and relevant for sustainable and equal development?

(2) how to create a transition towards the empowerment of women in order to secure greener and sustainable economies? What are and should be the main steps?  Where are the challenges today?
