On October 31st, the Nordic Council and UN City Copenhagen will host a high-level discussion to explore how the Nordic countries can work together to achieve the UN’s global sustainable development goals. The debate will lead up to a summit of the Nordic prime ministers during the 2016 Session of the Nordic Council.

In September 2015, world leaders adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - an ambitious agenda to lead the World towards a more sustainable, prosperous and equal future. The SDGs are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.

They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and addresses a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. Governments have the primary responsibility for follow-up and review at the national, regional and global levels in relation to the progress made in implementing the SDGs over the coming 15 years.

From SDGs to reality

The Nordic countries were very actively engaged in the formulation of the SDGs. Not only have the Nordic Countries invested heavily in getting an ambitious 2030 agenda, but also succeeded beyond expectations. The next big step is implementation.

Key questions to be addressed in the discussion:

  • Given the role the Nordic Countries have played and the influence they have had in shaping the agenda how can they now ensure that the SDGs become reality at home and for the world?
  • How can the Nordic private sector align themselves with the SDGs, and what can be done to facilitate a public-private dialogue on the implementation of the SDGs?

The questions will be addressed by two panels consisting of politicians, heads of UN agencies and experts. The President of the Nordic Council, Henrik Dam Kristensen and UN Under Secretary-General, Grete Faremo will deliver the opening speeches.

The event will be held at UN City Copenhagen, Marmorvej 51, DK-2100, on Monday October 31, 15.30-17.30.
