On 7 October, President of the Nordic Council Höskuldur Þórhallsson was invited to speak in Strasbourg on the EU’s Eastern Partnership at a Bureau Meeting of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.

In January, Co-President of Euronest and Finnish MEP Heidi Hautala spoke to Nordic and Baltic MEPs in Brussels at a meeting arranged by the Nordic Council and the Baltic Assembly on the EU’s Eastern Partnership. She has now invited the two organisations to present their own views on the EU’s Eastern Partnership at a meeting of Euronest. The Euronest Parliamentary Assembly consists of members of the European Parliament and politicians from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. Belarus is not yet a member and Azerbaijan has just left the partnership following the European Parliament’s criticism of undemocratic conditions in the country.

Contact with Ukraine stepped up

President of the Nordic Council Höskuldur Þórhallsson explained that the country closest to the Baltic region that the Nordic Council had previously had most contact with was Belarus. The crisis in Ukraine began to affect the whole of Europe following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, after which a series of meetings were held with politicians from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.

“The situation in Ukraine is a reminder that we in Europe are not immune to conflict, even if the crisis is currently overshadowed by an even worse situation in the Middle East. While our relationship with Russia has cooled somewhat, within the Nordic Council we have stepped up our contact with Ukraine and other countries in the Eastern Partnership.”

The Baltic Assembly was represented at the meeting by Romualds Ražuks from Latvia.
