Co-operation based on shared challenges

13.03.15 | Fréttir
There is considerable potential for a closer relationship between the Nordic Council of Ministers and Québec in Canada. In the spotlight is co-operation within research and technology that focuses on renewable energy and transport, health and education, and a better understanding of the mechanisms that govern economic development in the two regions.

These three areas fall under the umbrella term “sustainable development” and are highlighted in the declaration of intent regarding co-operation signed at the end of February by the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Dagfinn Høybråten, and the Prime Minister of Québec, Philippe Couillard, during the International Symposium on  Northern Development.

The symposium – part of Québec’s multi-year strategy for the development of its northern regions, ‘Plan Nord’ – attracted more than 450 people to 75 different presentations during the three-day conference.

“Conferences like this in which politicians, experts, and officials can come together and exchange their thoughts and ideas are a vital element of active networking,” says Høybråten.

The Nordic Council and Council of Ministers have more than six decades of successful co-operation behind them and continue to strive to promote even closer working relationships between the countries in the Region. Co-operation with Canada forms part of the Council of Ministers’ desire for the two regions to work together more closely with a view to diffusing Nordic values and the Nordic model outside the Region.
