Foreign ministers meet in Stockholm

29.10.14 | Fréttir
Nordic defence and security policies, Nordic embassy co-operation and democracy development in the east were some of the points on the agenda at the Nordic foreign ministers agenda in Stockholm on Wednesday.

The trouble spots out in the world worry the foreign ministers. Iceland's foreign minister, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, stressed that the foreign ministers continue to view the situation in the Ukraine as unacceptable.

The ministers announced that they will support a Nordic energy efficiency and humanitarian support initiative in Eastern and Southern Ukraine. The ministers gave assurances that the Nordic countries will also stand by the Ukraine, Georgia and Moldavia in the same way that they stood by the Baltic countries when they were building their democracies in the 1990s.

"The Nordic values and experiences can be a help, whether it's about political development or, for example, environmental matters", said Denmark's foreign minister Martin Lidegaard.

Two state solution important

The ministers also insist that they want to see a peaceful two state solution between Israel and Palestine.

"We are disappointed about the new settlements being built – they will make the two state solution more difficult", said Norway's foreign minister Børge Brende.

Finland stated on Wednesday that they will have to close three small embassies in Europe.

"Much could be done to strengthen the Nordic embassies and representative co-operation", said Finland's foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja.

The Nordic foreign ministers continued the day by meeting with the Nordic Council Presidium. All the ministers also took part in the foreign policy debate with the MPs in the Nordic Council.
