The President of the Nordic Council Karin Åström, Sweden, condemns the use of force and violence in Kiev.

"Everyone should refrain from use of violence. That appeal goes to the security forces, but also to radical elements among the demonstrators", Åström says.

"It is up to the people of Ukraine in a peaceful way to decide on their own future. A sustainable political settlement can only be reached through talks between the President and the opposition. We very much hope the deal to end the crisis, after all-night talks mediated by three foreign ministers of France, Poland and Germany, will bring a peaceful solution. EU, Ukraine – and Russia – will all benefit from better relations instead of a sad conflict dragging down a big European country.

Ukraine´s citizens should have the rights to assemble and speak freely. The principles of democracy, rule of law and civil society should be principles to which all participants agree."
