Potent greenhouse gases (HFCs, PFCs and SF6) are covered by the Kyoto Protocol. Although the gases account for only a small percentage of the total emission of greenhouse gases, they represent a challenge that must be taken up, if the goals of the protocol are to be achieved.
This technical report describes the use of the potent greenhouse gases in the Nordic countries. At the same time, alternative technology is described as well as the relative additional costs for alternatives.
Alternatives exist for most applications, and the ”success stories” about using alternative technology in the Nordic countries are described. Among these are products like domestic and commercial refrigerators, supermarkets refrigeration plants, fire extinguishants, insulation foam, flexible foam, magnesium production, etc.
