Food production and self-sufficiency in small Nordic countries and regions

The purpose of the project is to learn more about whether and how a higher degree of self-sufficiency in food would help build more sustainable food systems in the Nordic societies taking part in the project, i.e. the Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Åland as well as the Danish island of Bornholm.

The project will

  • analyse the degree of self-sufficiency in food in the countries/regions taking part
  • analyse the positive and negative consequences of greater self-sufficiency in food from economic, social and environmental perspectives
  • describe the potential and challenges involved in greater self-sufficiency in food in the countries/regions taking part
  • describe good examples from each country/region, which are transferable to other countries/regions in the project and/or to the Nordic Region in general.

The project is an initiative of the NCE sub-group for small societies. It is being run under the auspices of the Nordic Working Group for Circular Economy (NCE) with funding from the Nordic Council of Ministers.
