Student organisations in Finland

All higher education institutions in Finland have their own student union. For university students, membership of the student union is mandatory for all undergraduates and postgraduate students (Bachelor’s or Master’s students). For doctoral candidates, membership is optional. You can find the contact details of the student unions on the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) website.

For students at universities of applied sciences, membership of a student union is optional. You can find the unions’ contact details on the University of Applied Sciences Students in Finland (SAMOK) website.

Where can I get a student card and what benefits do I get with it?

Foreign student cards are generally not valid in Finland. You can get some benefits in Finland with an international ISIC student card . You can order a Finnish student card through your own student union. You can get benefits with student cards issued by most student unions. These are listed on the  Frank service.

When you show your Finnish student card you get a discount on the price of student meals at Kela-subsidised student canteens.
