Nominees for the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2020

There are many paths to greater biodiversity, which is both a source of prosperity and a prerequisite for our existence. However, the current situation is not promising, with around one in eight plant species threatened with extinction. The Nordic Council wants to do something about this. In 2020, its annual Environment Prize will go to a company, organisation or individual engaged in exemplary work that helps preserve biodiversity.
“We received more nominations than usual this year, and the selection process has been tough. The Nordic Region has a wealth of individuals, researchers, organisations and companies doing biodiversity work, and it has been a pleasure to learn more about the nominees. We believe we have identified the most creative and innovative environmental projects and initiatives, ones that are not only making a positive impact locally, but also have great potential to be ‘exported’ around the world,” says Elva Rakel Jónsdóttir, chair of the Adjudication Committee.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s nominations were announced online, rather than at the democracy festival LÝSA in Iceland, as in recent years.
The theme of this year’s prize reflects and supports UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 (Life below Water) and 15 (Life on Land).
The winner will be announced on 27 October 2020.

About the Nordic Council Environment Prize
The point of the prize, which was first awarded in 1995, is to raise awareness of work on the environment in the Nordic Region. The theme for 2020 is biodiversity. The DKK 350,000 prize goes to a company, organisation or individual in recognition of exemplary efforts to integrate respect for the environment into their business or work, or for some other form of extraordinary environmental initiative.
