Combating and preventing HIV and related infections

Two years of co-operation between the Nordic Region and Northwest Russia have resulted in the creation of a new platform for sharing knowledge and experience on best practice in combating and preventing HIV and related infections.

“We’re very pleased with the results and the enthusiasm that all the parties have demonstrated in their work,” said senior advisor to the Nordic Council of Ministers, Kåre Geil during a speech at the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg, where more than 50 experts from Northwest Russia and the Nordic Region gathered to discuss the results of the co-operation project Mobilizing Resources for Better Response: HIV&Co, 2017-2018, and to look ahead to 2019. Central to this is the formation of a professional network and a platform for sharing knowledge and best practice.

Prevention targeted at young people

The co-operation programme has seen the sharing of vital knowledge between the Nordic Region and Russia with regard to the prevention of HIV, with a particular focus on young people. In this regard, Russian specialists have been inspired by Icelandic efforts focusing on risk behaviours and young people, as well as by prevention and treatment activities in Sweden and Finland.

Strengthening healthcare measures

In St. Petersburg, Russia, and in Helsinki, Finland, workshops have been organised to strengthen the fight against tuberculosis with the participation of doctors and specialists in the field. And in the Pskov region of Russia, 40 students have attended a volunteer camp.

Co-operation will continue with a focus on antibiotic resistance

The current two-year co-operation programme has established a solid foundation for further co-operation. Co-operation between Northwest Russia and the Nordic countries will continue for the next two years, focusing on increasing knowledge among healthcare professionals and the population at large with regard to antibiotic resistance.
