Nordic municipalities and Agenda 2030

Although the implementation of Agenda 2030 is conducted at national level, local authorities play a key role in the implementation itself. They are closest to residents, local businesses, and civil society organisations. Although the Nordic countries often top global league tables in their fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals, many local authorities in the region have just started to link their sustainability efforts directly to the SDGs.

Consequently, under the auspices of the Generation 2030 programme, the Nordic Council of Ministers has tasked Nordregio – a research institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers – with mapping the Nordic local authorities, which are the pioneers in efforts relating to Agenda 2030. In the autumn of 2018, the “Global Goals for Local Priorities” report was published. It identifies 27 local authorities in the Nordic Region that are pioneering efforts relating to Agenda 2030, and describes their priorities and activities. It also addresses the challenges and success factors in efforts relating to the SDGs. The report will provide local authorities with ideas on how to implement Agenda 2030 and tell experts and policy decision-makers at national and regional level how they can support the municipalities in their work.
