Nordic Council President condemns Paris attack

Statement by the President of the Nordic Council, Höskuldur Þórhallsson, following the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris

“I condemn this horrific attack in Paris, which is a violation of freedom of speech and democratic values. These values are of the greatest importance in the Nordic countries and are the foundations of our open welfare societies.”  

“The attack in Paris also acts as a reminder that we must oppose extremism and prejudice at every opportunity. We need to be careful not to make value judgements about religions or social groups and continue our fight for peace and justice.”

The Nordic Council is the official inter-parliamentary body of the Nordic Region. Human rights, democracy, equality, and the rule of law have been fundamental values ​​of the Nordic Council since its inception in 1952 and are at the heart of the Council’s international activities.
