“We take exception to the way in which the press and journalists are currently being treated in Turkey. We support free and independent press, which is necessary for an open and modern democracy,” says Jorodd Asphjell, Chairman of the Committee for Knowledge and Culture in the Nordic Region, from Trondheim where the committee has just held its summer meeting.

Several Nordic press organisations are encouraging their governments to support freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Turkey. The Swedish Union of Journalists has approached the Swedish government to ask for its support. On Tuesday this week, Norwegian press organisations met with Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende to demand that the Norwegian government puts measures in place to safeguard freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Turkey.

The Nordic Council Committee for Knowledge and Culture in the Nordic Region will encourage Nordic ministers for foreign affairs to join forces in their efforts to support and safeguard free press in Turkey.
