President of the Nordic Council in 2022, Erkki Tuomioja.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President of the Nordic Council, Erkki Tuomioja, made the following statement:

“I want to express my strong support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, who are now being subjected to a completely unjust and full-scale military attack by Russia. Russia’s actions are contrary to both international law and the order of European security, and the use of military force is completely unacceptable. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and Russia must respect its integrity. The Nordic Council has always stood up for democracy, peace and co-operation, and as President of the Nordic Council I want to express my strong condemnation of the Russian invasion. How the Nordic countries can help Ukraine and the Ukrainian people will be a central issue on the council’s agenda.”

The Nordic Council is the official inter-parliamentary body. The Nordic Council was formed in 1952. The Council has 87 elected members from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden as well as from the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.
