Håvard Gimse is one of the 13 nominees for the 2023 Nordic Council Music Prize.

Rationale

Pianist Håvard Gimse has a special place among Norwegian musicians and is one of the leading musicians in the Nordics. His fondness for Scandinavian and Norwegian repertoire has made him one of the most influential artists in this arena. Gimse is in demand both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and several of Scandinavia’s best classical artists choose him over anyone else to accompany them. Gimse is a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music and until recently was the artistic director of the Oslo Chamber Music Festival. He has enjoyed an extensive international career and, since 1992, has released a large number of important recordings. Gimse has gone on extensive tours around Scandinavia, played with orchestras around, and given concerts on many of the world’s most prestigious concert stages. The most impressive thing about Håvard Gimse is that after such a long and extensive career, he becomes more interesting and more inspiring as a musician for audiences, composers and fellow musicians. He plays with an unpredictable playfulness and motivation in the moment, which is impossible not to be seduced by.
