On the occasion of hosting the Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation Ministerial Meetings in May 2018, together with the European Commission, we, the Energy Ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Faroe Islands and Åland, agree to strengthen Nordic global leadership on clean energy innovation and deployment and:

  • acknowledge the central role that energy plays in the global economy towards the achievement of sustainable development, as evidenced by the energy sector accounting for two thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions;

  • continue to demonstrate, as highlighted in the Nordic Region, that reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing economic growth is both viable and beneficial when transitioning into a clean energy future;

  • reaffirm our commitment to improving the sustainable use of and access to clean energy in the pursuit of fulfilling our national targets and the global Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement;

  • further develop the Nordic Region as a front runner in the integration of renewable energy, energy efficient solutions and smart energy through open and market-based international and public-private collaboration in order to ensure the smartest, most integrated and intelligent low-emission green economy, characterised by a high level of competitiveness and security of supply;

  • increase Nordic co-operation on research, development and innovation for clean energy, energy efficiency and energy systems with the aim of delivering globally attractive, cost effective and smart energy solutions; and

  • work together with other countries and key international organisations and initiatives to accelerate the mobilisation of clean energy investments and promote an economically and environmentally sustainable transformation of global energy systems, taking advantage of modern low-emission technologies.

We welcome the strong commitment of Nordic companies and organisations to accelerate the clean energy transitions. As Ministers, we endorse and invite further collaboration between the public and private sectors in this respect as markets are paramount in ensuring a cost-effective clean energy transition.

Under the umbrella of the Nordic Clean Energy Week 2018, a range of events and meetings will be held. These events will facilitate discussions on how to increase the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency, and improve the innovation system for clean energy solutions, e.g. at the scientific workshop on The Transitions to a Low Carbon Society, the Digital Roundtable, the Clean Energy Investment Forum, the Energy Infrastructure Forum and the Energy Efficiency Global Forum.
