UN Mercury Conference closes

The UN Mercury Conference in Stockholm drew to a close on Friday in a positive atmosphere. The internal power struggle within the EU, which had cast dark shadows over the conference earlier in the week, failed to have the negative effect on the meeting that many had feared. The participating countries, including the USA and China, have all adopted a positive stance to the target of a binding global agreement on mercury by 2013.

There is an ongoing internal struggle within the EU, which has led to a marked limitation in the Union's ability to negotiate in Stockholm. The Commission and member governments have not been able to agree on who should represent the EU in the negotiations.

Take responsibility for the Arctic environment

"First of all the Nordic countries have a particular responsibility for the state of the environment in the Arctic. Here scientists can measure the results of the air pollution in the hemisphere in the form of higher levels of polluted matter which has been transported by air streams from distant parts of the world. Most of the mercury, for example, comes from coolers in China and India," says Lars Moseholm, member of the Nordic Sea and Air Quality Group.
