El Perro del Mar (Sarah Assbring) is nominated for the 2025 Nordic Council Music Prize.

Sarah Assbring (b. 1977) has been releasing music under the name El Perro del Mar since 2004. As a songwriter, she is a minimalist who mesmerises with repetitions that quietly vibrate with drama. She is a keen seeker of beauty, a restless romantic. Many of her songs resemble prayers or incantations.

Since her debut, her distinct artistic expression has been honed and fearlessly repeatedly reshaped – ranging from melancholic girl group-inspired lo-fi indie pop, to soulful organ hymns, modern club beats, East Asian flutes and string instruments, and compositions for stage works and museums, leading up to her latest album, “Big Anonymous” (2024). A haunting meditation on life's fragility and the inevitability of death, it features feather-light layers of sound and sweeping sonic textures that seamlessly complement the fearless lyricism.

After 20 years as an artist, El Perro del Mar is now more sharply defined than ever.
