Jobs are disappearing and new ones are emerging, so how do we equip Nordic workers for the needs of the future? The Nordic Council of Ministers is stepping up its efforts by bringing together experts and labour market partners, and applying the latest knowledge to develop solutions.

Introduction

Introduction

We must bolster our competitiveness in the Nordic Region and ensure that everyone is included.

The Nordic labour market model is known for co-operation between the public sector and labour market partners. Historically, it has ensured security, flexibility, and a high capacity for adaptation – resulting in high employment, innovation, and productivity.

However, it also faces challenges, namely the need for a rapid green and digital transition, demographic changes, and increased international competition.

For this reason, the Nordic Council of Ministers has established a new advisory board that brings the various stakeholders together in a Nordic tripartite dialogue. The board’s task is to find concrete answers to two key questions that are pivotal for the Nordic Region’s future competitiveness.

The two questions are:

How do we anticipate needs for future competencies in the Nordic Region?

How do we create systems that better match competencies with the needs of businesses?

Research into future competencies has been carried out by these institutions:

Quote from Secretary General

Nordic Region in tripartite dialogue

“We’re standing on a burning platform where skills gaps threaten our innovation and competitiveness. That’s why it’s crucial that we work together – across sectors and national borders – to leverage the Nordic model to find solutions that support the labour market of the future.”

- Karen Ellemann, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers
