Hugla – Faroe Islands
Hugla is on the shortlist for the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2025
Hugla, a non-profit organisation, has been nominated for its work in reducing waste and promoting sustainability through educational practices. It engages children and adults from schools and institutions in creative recycling projects, transforming waste into art and exhibitions in urban spaces.
Hugla also runs free family days and festival workshops for all ages where people can explore their creativity using recycled materials. These events bring people together in communities that promote circular thinking and a sense of responsibility for nature.
Through play and practice, children learn to value resources, assume responsibility for nature, and see opportunities in what other people consider waste. It is an approach that reduces the volume of waste and promotes sustainable behaviour from a young age.
Hugla is the only organisation in the Faroe Islands that works at the intersection of waste prevention, education and creativity. Its approach transcends sectors, is practical, reduces waste, enhances environmental awareness and generates strong local support for green agendas. As a model, it has environmental, social and didactic benefits. Hugla’s experience and teaching materials can provide inspiration for groups in other countries and for international partnerships on sustainability education and training.
