RÓTIN – the Faroe Islands
RÓTIN in Klaksvík is an inspiring residential school for young people with a unique way of translating the Nordic values of sustainability, community and respect for nature into tangible actions. The school deserves to be nominated for the Environmental Prize because of the dedicated efforts it puts into making sustainability a natural part of young people’s everyday lives and understanding of the world. The name Rótin means ‘the root’ – that which provides nourishment, stability and growth. It is strong image for the work that the school does – the values and knowledge that students learn take root in each and every one of them and then spread outwards to their families, local communities and society in general. That is how RÓTIN will bring about long-term changes that extends far beyond the its walls. RÓTIN teaches about the environment and climate through practical experience and the choices its students make every day – not just through theory. The teaching is based on the rhythms of nature and the changing seasons, and gives the young people a deeper understanding of humanity’s dependence on natural resources. Great importance is also attached to reducing waste and valuing materials and raw ingredients. The students learn to repair, to recycle and to create new things from existing resources rather than throwing them away. RÓTIN is also a dynamic learning centre that provides accommodation and runs courses in areas such as design, knitting, cookery and creative crafts. What all these activities have in common is that they are based on sustainable principles, local resources and respect for Nordic craft traditions. The school combines a modern lifestyle with responsible consumption and care for nature. With its holistic approach to understanding nature, resource awareness, craft skills, community and lifelong learning, RÒTIN serves as a role model for Nordic educational and cultural institutions. The school demonstrates how sustainability can be a natural part of everyday life and generate a positive ripple effect for future generations.
