Trondheim Jazz Orchestra is nominated for the 2025 Nordic Council Music Prize.

For 25 years, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra has stood out as a unique ensemble of high international calibre. The orchestra has performed at prestigious venues in New York and Tokyo and performs regularly across Europe. They have both challenged and collaborated with major figures in international jazz such as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, and Jason Moran. At the same time, they provide an annual opportunity for a young emerging talent to develop new large-scale music through the JazZtipendiat project.

The orchestra, which varies in size, is assembled from a pool of leading musicians, with instrumentation carefully tailored to each specific production. This results in an expressive, playful, and powerful orchestral sound as the ensemble's foundation – without sacrificing the strength of individual voices.

The artistic directors have consistently focused on drawing out the qualities of small ensembles within a big band format, creating more space for spontaneity and improvisation than is typical for large ensembles. Their work emphasises strong aural-based musicianship and a vibrant curiosity for new musical possibilities.

The group's expression belongs to a modernist jazz tradition, drawing inspiration from the entire history of jazz, other genres, and music from around the world.
