Veronique Vaka is nominated for the 2020 Nordic Council Music Prize for the orchestral work “Lendh” (2019).

Rationale:

Vaka is a Canadian composer based in the southern region of Iceland. Her collection of works shows increasingly innovative means of translating nature into musical forms with excellent craftsmanship and lyrical sense. Born in 1986, she completed a master’s in music composition at the Iceland University of the Arts. Her intention as a composer is to create a poetic context from unspoiled nature and music, while drawing from her surroundings, which are characterised by the raging seas and rumblings of the earth. Her style is in effect quite organic, with an emphasis on small details such as rhythmic, textural, and timbral elements. Vaka has composed works for various chamber ensembles, a string quartet, a violin concerto, and works for symphony orchestra. Her composition Lendh for symphony orchestra was recently nominated for the Icelandic Music Award as the 2019 composition of the year.
