Yggdrasil are among the 13 nominations for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2017.

Yggdrasil is an ensemble of improvisational musicians who have mastered a huge range of styles. Centred around pianist and founder Kristian Blak, much of their music is created in symbiosis with other art forms, including dance and the visual arts.

The core members are Faroese musicians with a background in jazz, but the line-up is subject to both artistic and geographical variation. Yggdrasil’s trademark fusions of improvisational elements from different traditions – jazz, world music, rock and classical – invariably result in exciting, unpredictable and sometimes humorous soundscapes.

Since it started in 1981, Yggdrasil has released 15 albums and toured the world, including some of its remotest corners.
