The North Atlantic fish conflict and the proposal for sustainability criteria for the mining industry in the Nordic Region are expected to cause a heated debate at the Nordic Council Theme Session in Akureyri. The focus of the theme Session on 8 April will be on sustainable exploitation of natural resources Accreditation for journalists is now open.

The proposal to develop criteria for sustainable Nordic mining is awaiting a decision in the plenary. The proposal comes from an initiative from the Centre Group in the Nordic Council which would like to see the criteria implemented in a future declaration on responsible mining.

The mackerel and herring conflicts in the North Atlantic have led to internal Nordic frictions. It is important for the Nordic Council to find long-term sustainable solutions to the conflicts, from both a legal and biological perspective. The Council's Environment and Natural Resources Committee took the initiative back in October for an investigation into how the pelagic stocks in the Northeast Atlantic are managed, as well as finding measures that can support sustainable management in the long term.

Taking part in the theme debate will be Iceland's Minister for Nordic Co-operation, Eygló Harðardóttir, Minister for the Environment, Fisheries and Agriculture Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson and Minister of Industry, Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir.

The Nordic Council Theme Session starts at 13.00 in 8 April. The Theme Session is preceded by meetings in the Nordic Council party groups and committees on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Journalists who want to cover the Session must be accredited by Wednesday 2 April at the latest using this form. There is the possibility of a travel grant.

Information about the press briefing and other practical events will be regularly updated on www.norden.org/temasession2014.
