The fight against climate change and the new paradigm connected with bioeconomy are often pitted against each other. Some see it as a struggle between those who want to preserve and those who want to extract. In this issue of “Green Growth the Nordic Way” we explore the synergies between these two agendas.

Often the relationship between the climate agenda and the bioeconomy aganda is seen as a fight between protecting nature rather than using the resources available. But this is a false dichotomy and the new bioeconomy in fact has the potential to help create growth while minimizing climate impact.

A major task of organizations like the Nordic Council of Ministers is to build bridges and connecting the two “camps” is not just possible, but the only rational thing to do.

In this issue of "Green Growth the Nordic Way" we present the results from a major study examining the impact of climate change on the primary sector in the Nordic countries. Agriculture, fisheries and forestry in the Nordic-Baltic region in some ways stand to gain from a warmer climate, but it also poses many challenges and calls for strong political action.

We also look at the first results from one of the projects under NordBio, the bioeconomy initiative lead by the Icelandic chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers. In an impressive display of food innovation, the NordBio Food Innovation project shows exciting ways to develop new products from underutilized resources ni the North Atlantic.
