Co-operation between the Nordic countries and China was one of the topics on the agenda at an informal meeting of the Nordic prime ministers in Norway today. The Nordic prime ministers Bjarni Benediktsson, Stefan Löfven, Juha Sipilä, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and Erna Solberg agree that further ad hoc Nordic co-operation with China is an area suited to further investment. The two-day meeting concludes tomorrow with the launch of the Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges initiative.
Nordic co-operation is more important than ever considering the uncertain times we now find ourselves in. The shared values and mutual trust between the nations that comprise the Nordic Region are unique.

Norway holds the presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2017. On 29 and 30 May, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg is hosting her Nordic counterparts in Bergen.

“China has shown interest in working with our region, and we are in agreement that we should continue discussing increased co-operation with China,” Solberg says.

In addition to co-operation with China, the meeting – which takes place in Solberg’s hometown of Bergen – sees the prime ministers discuss the continued development of the Nordic Region as the most integrated in the world, and the fight against extremism.

Other items on the agenda include the Nordic Region and the UN, the transition to climate-friendly solutions, and digitalisation.

“Nordic co-operation is more important than ever considering the uncertain times we now find ourselves in. The shared values and mutual trust between the nations that comprise the Nordic Region are unique,” Solberg says.

Launch of prime ministerial initiative

Tomorrow’s venue is the Institute of Marine Research in Austevoll for a briefing on the institute and sustainable marine management. Following this, the Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges prime ministerial initiative will be launched.

The initiative is a key element in the Nordic response to the UN’s sustainable development goals.
