Recycled textile fibres, circular clothing design, Greenland’s first thrift store that sells private individuals’ recycled goods, and a framework for fashion weeks are among the seven nominees for the 7 Nordic Council Environment Prize. This year, the Nordic Council Environment Prize puts the spotlight on the textile industry and the environmental and climate challenges it faces.

The 2023 Nordic Council Environment Prize will be awarded to a key player that is pursuing the systemic transformation of the textile industry and textile consumption in a way that is sustainable on a global scale. This year’s theme covers the entire life cycle of textiles, from the production of the raw material to the design, sale, repair, reuse, recycling, and disposal.

“There are enough reasons why the adjudication committee has this year chosen to focus on the major challenges posed by textile production and consumption. Consequently, I’m delighted to be able to present seven fantastic Nordic solutions to several of the challenges. The field of nominees demonstrates that the Nordic Region is at the forefront of the necessary transformation of the entire textile value chain and that a sustainable textile industry is an opportunity,” says Cilia Indahl, head of the adjudication committee for the Nordic Council Environment Prize.

The textile industry poses many challenges – social, environmental, and climate-related. The Nordic textile industry, retail industry, fashion designers, and consumers can act as role models and contribute to the promotion of development on a global level.

The 2023 Nordic Council Environment Prize will therefore be awarded to a key player in the promotion of sustainable textile production and consumption. The theme of this year’s Nordic Council Environment Prize supports the following global sustainable development goals: SDG 12, SDG 9, and SDG 17.
