As part of the process of conversion to a green economy, the Nordic Ecolabel will be revamped to make environmentally-friendly products more competitive.

Now that the EU Commission has introduced a new measuring system for the environmental footprint of various products, the Nordic Council of Ministers is funding a three-year project looking at how the European system can be used to complement the Nordic Ecolabel and enhance its impact.

“Products should also be planned so that they are both durable and recyclable,” says project manager Ari Nissinen of the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, the organisation responsible for the project.

The project will culminate in recommendations to the Nordic Council of Ministers and the European Commission as well as a review of the criteria for the Nordic Ecolabel.
