Young people supported by Nordic fund to lead efforts to combat climate change
The Nordic youth fund for biodiversity and the climate was launched in 2024. The fund is the result of broad political co-operation between the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers, which finance the fund, and the Danish Youth Council (DUF), which administers it. The proposal for the fund came from the Nordic Council’s Committee for a Sustainable Nordic Region and the Nordic Youth Council.
Through the fund, support is provided to a variety of initiatives that are operated by young people and that involve participants from at least two Nordic countries. The aim of the fund is to strengthen young people’s influence in climate and biodiversity issues and to give them the opportunity to put their ideas into practice across national borders.
Young people come together in Åland
One of the projects that has been granted funding under the scheme is Catalysts for Change, organised by Regeneration 2030. The event brought young people together in Åland from across the Nordic and Baltic regions where they gained the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to take the lead and take action for the climate and biodiversity both locally and regionally. For many, the meeting gave them a sense of being part of something greater:
“Sometimes it can feel like you’re the only one trying to make a difference, but when you meet young people from across the Nordic and Baltic countries, it really feels like ‘Wow, we really are making a difference’!” says participant Livya Adrian.
