ALDIN gegn loftslagsvá – Iceland
ALDIN gegn loftslagsvá is on the shortlist for the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2025
The ALDIN movement consists entirely of people in the third age. The first group of its kind in Iceland, it has only taken a few years for ALDIN to establish itself as an important player among the relatively few Icelandic environmental organisations. The movement has a clear public voice. Its members write articles, organise debates, issue statements about government bills and policies, and are active on social media. Although its main focus is on the climate threat, ALDIN is also involved in nature conservation and other environmental issues.
The Icelandic word “aldin” means both to have reached a ripe old age and a piece of fruit. The name reflects the group’s demographic and the fact that its members’ experiences can be considered the fruit of a long life and will hopefully be put to good use. Many of ALDIN’s members have been active in environmental and nature conservation for a long time, and the movement provides a platform to make their voices heard, even if they have now retired.
Up until now, young people have been more prominent in the climate fight than respectable, grey-haired men and women, which is why the movement plays such an important role. Their age and work experience give them a certain weight in society, which ALDIN utilises for the benefit of all. The organisation also helps ensure that advocates from all age groups have a voice.
