From climate ambitions to action in everyday life.

Grønne Nabofællesskaber is on the shortlist for the Nordic Council Environment Prize‍ 2025

While they may not know where to begin, 80% of Danes would like to do more to address climate change and biodiversity loss. Grønne Nabofællesskaber (Green Neighbourhood Communities) makes it easy to get involved in a local community and work with others – on communal meals, at clothing exchange markets, and planting pocket forests, among other activities. It was the network that came up with the idea for the annual Climate Action Day, which is designed to generate pride and visibility and inspire hope and collective action. In 2025, some 250,000 Danes took part in the green activities.

Grønne Nabofællesskaber combines organisation with mobilisation, supporting people’s ideas and commitment. The flexibility of the network concept means it can be adapted to suit all sorts of communities – from small settlements in Greenland to big Nordic cities – because each community defines its own goals and chooses its own activities. In just a few years, the network has grown to over 250 communities involving 30,000 committed individuals throughout Denmark, and the concept has already been adopted in Germany and Norway. Grønne Nabofællesskaber is also working with the international city network C40 to spread the concept.

The initiative demonstrates that fostering a sense of community and taking action at local level make it easier and more fun to do something about the climate and biodiversity crisis. It is a positive model for work on environmental issues throughout the Nordic Region by giving people something practical to do – one at a time.

The initiative has spawned an engaging and scalable movement, inspiring thousands of people to translate climate ambitions into practical action in their daily lives.
It shows that the green transition starts locally within communities but has a global impact.
