Passport requirements when travelling to Norway
Must you bring your passport when travelling to Norway?
You can read below about the regulations that apply in different situations.
Nordic citizens
Nordic citizens can travel to Norway from other Nordic countries without needing to bring a passport, but we recommend that you have your passport or a valid ID card with you. Nordic countries may have temporary border controls, and only a passport or a national ID card can be used to document citizenship.
Passport requirements for children under 18
Children travelling with parents or guardians from another Nordic country do not need a passport when travelling to Norway. However, check with the airline or transport company whether they require a valid ID for all passengers. There may also be a temporary border control at which the child must be able to prove Nordic citizenship, and only a passport or national ID card is acceptable.
If the child is travelling alone or with other adults, the border control may require a written letter of consent from a parent or guardian. Consequently, the child should have with them:
- A passport or national ID card
- A letter of consent
Travelling from countries outside the Nordic region
Everyone entering Norway from countries outside the Nordic region, including Nordic citizens, must have a valid passport or other approved ID travel document.
Citizens of EU, EEA and Schengen countries
You must have with you a passport or national ID card that shows your citizenship. You can travel to Norway without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
Citizens of countries outside the Nordic region, the EU, EEA and Schengen area
You must have a valid passport to enter Norway. The passport must generally be valid for at least three months after your planned departure date from the Schengen area. Most people also need a visa. You can apply for a visa from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (Utlendingsdirektoratet, UDI).
Passport requirements when travelling to Svalbard
Svalbard is part of Norway, but is outside the Schengen area. Everyone travelling to Svalbard must bring a valid travel document. This also applies for crew and passengers on private flights and maritime vessels, regardless of size or type.
A passport is valid as a travel document for entering Svalbard. A Norwegian national ID card and documents stated in Appendix 4 of the Immigration Ordinance are also approved.
When travelling to Svalbard you should remember the following:
- Everyone must present a valid passport/ID document when travelling to and from Svalbard, including Norwegian and Nordic citizens.
- There is no visa obligation when visiting Svalbard.
- If you are travelling via mainland Norway and need a visa to enter the Schengen area, your visa must allow two entries if you are returning to the mainland after your visit.
- Residence on Svalbard does not entitle you to residence in Norway or other Schengen countries.
- Flights between mainland Norway and Svalbard are regarded as international flights. There are passport controls at the airports.
