Chair of Freedom of Movement Council Kimmo Sasi has died
Kimmo Sasi had a long career within Nordic co-operation. He became a member of the Nordic Council in 1987 and held various roles within both the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Council itself up until his death. He was also President of the Nordic Council in 2012.
He had been a member of the Freedom of Movement Council since 2018. He took over as chair of the Freedom of Movement Council this year, coinciding with Finland and Åland taking over the presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The Freedom of Movement Council is an independent body tasked by the Nordic governments to promote freedom of movement and trade between the Nordic countries.
Kimmo Sasi also had a long career in Finnish politics. He was elected to the Finnish parliament in 1983 and served as a member of parliament until 2015. Kimmo Sasi also held ministerial posts on two occasions, serving as both Minister of Foreign Trade and Minister of Transport and Communications between 1999 and 2003.
He was a member of Finland’s National Coalition Party.
