It’s time for the summer democracy festivals
This year, the Nordic Council of Ministers is taking part in democracy festivals in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Why not drop by the Nordic tent at the festivals or watch selected events online? Some 400 decision-makers from the public and private sectors, civil society organisations, opinion makers, experts, young people, etc., will be there – all with their own views on the added value that Nordic co-operation brings, all ready to engage in democratic dialogue and discuss ideas.
Societal security a top priority
A new reality and uncertain times call for fresh arenas in which to work together and for those involved to relate to each other differently. The concepts of societal security and preparedness are important to all of the Nordic and Baltic governments. Societal security refers to the ability to maintain essential functions and supplies and to protect the life, health and fundamental values of the people. The challenges nations face in providing societal security often transcend borders, so Nordic, European and international co-operation all have a great deal to offer. The Nordic Council of Ministers plays a unique role as a formal and informal facilitator of co-operation and as a platform for promoting shared political priorities and developing Nordic strategies.
We must fight for democratic values
The Nordic Region is built on strong democratic traditions, the rule of law, widespread gender equality, free and independent media and high levels of education. At a time when Nordic values are under pressure, it is crucial that we maintain and strengthen those foundations. We will ensure rich cultural co-operation, as part of which access to Nordic culture and heritage will enhance cohesion, inclusion and diversity. In education and training, we must bolster democratic skills by emphasising the importance of knowledge, critical thinking and constructive exchanges of views. We will work together to ensure that everyone in the Nordic Region has the opportunity and prerequisites to play an active role in society, both in person and online, without facing discrimination of any kind.
