Nordic Council at UN Commission on the Status of Women
Eva Biaudet and Kristine L. Solli participated as the Nordic Council’s delegation to CSW70 in New York from 9 to 13 March.
The conference is the world’s most important forum for work on women’s rights and gender equality. At an interparliamentary meeting organised by the Nordic Council, Nordic parliamentarians came together to support the Nordic governments’ joint declaration “Pushing for Progress – Towards gender equality and equal rights for LGBTI persons 2025–2027”.

Gender equality, women’s rights, and the rights of LGBTI people are increasingly being challenged right around the world. The Nordic countries are therefore stressing the importance of continuing to strive for gender equality and defending fundamental rights.
The statement made at the interparliamentary meeting makes it clear that the Nordic parliamentarians participating in the UN CSW stand steadfast in spite of the growing consequences of war, geopolitical tensions, and challenges posed for gender equality and women’s rights by global anti-rights movements – gender equality is simply not something that can be put on the back burner when times get tougher and is prerequisite for societies and democracies that are strong, robust, and prepared.
The delegation from the Nordic Council Committee for Welfare in the Nordic Region participated in meetings, side events, and discussions with other parliamentarians and decision-makers, international organisations, and stakeholders in civil society. The topics covered included women in war and conflict, gender equality in climate policy, violence against women, homicide in close relationships, and abortion rights.
The Nordic Council Committee for Welfare in the Nordic Region works on matters relating to health, social policy, and gender equality. Focus areas for the committee include women’s rights, combatting gender-based violence, and strong Nordic co-operation on welfare policy.
