The Nordic prime ministers are seeking to boost co-operation both within the region and internationally. The Nordic prime ministers met the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Dagfinn Høybråten, and the President of the Nordic Council Henrik Dam Kristensen during an informal meeting in Åland on Wednesday.

“I’m very pleased with the prime ministers’ ambition for the Nordic Region to be the most integrated in the world, as well as with their continued support for the reform of Nordic co-operation,” Høybråten said following the meeting. He added that that the Nordic premiers were pleased with the flexibility and alacrity of Nordic co-operation on, for example, integration.

At the meeting, Høybråten reported on the prime ministers’ decision to implement the “New Norden 2.0” reform package, whose purpose is to increase the relevance of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Nordic governments, businesses, and civil society.

The prime ministers were also briefed on the new Nordic co-operation programme for refugees and immigrants that was presented to the Nordic Council at the Session. The co-operation programme will support the efforts of the Nordic countries with regard to integration by bolstering Nordic co-operation on the integration of refugees and immigrants with a focus on exchanging experiences and developing new knowledge.

The Secretary General also updated the prime ministers on the status of their “Nordic solutions to global societal challenges” initiative, which they launched in Reykjavik in October 2015. Three topics have been chosen – Nordic Green, Nordic Food and Welfare, and the Nordic Gender Effect – with a total of five flagship projects, all of which seek to consolidate Nordic positions of strength. The five flagship projects are: Nordic Sustainable Cities, Nordic Climate and Energy Solutions, Nordic Food and Nutrition, Nordic Welfare Solutions, and The Nordic Deal – Gender, Business, and Work

President of the Nordic Council Henrik Dam Kristensen also took part in the meeting.

“We discussed the topic of our summit – the implementation of the UN’s global sustainable development goals – and the prime ministers look forward to discussing this with us in Copenhagen,” Kristensen said.

The Nordic prime ministers will next meet in conjunction with the 68th Session of the Nordic Council, which will take place in Copenhagen from 1 to 3 November.
