Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend the Session of the Nordic Council to address the members of the council in Reykjavik on 29 October. The main theme of this year’s Session is “Peace and Security in the Arctic”.

During his visit to Iceland, Zelenskyy will also meet with the Nordic prime ministers who are travelling to Iceland to participate in the Session. They will hold bilateral meetings and host a joint press conference.

A great honour for the Nordic Council

President of the Nordic Council Bryndís Haraldsdóttir and Vice-President Oddný G. Harðardóttir both acknowledge that it is a great honour for the Nordic Council to get a visit from Zelenskyy.

We’re both delighted and proud that Nordic support for Ukraine is so strong and unwavering right across the Nordic political spectrum. From day one of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Nordic countries have actively supported Ukraine in its fight

they say.

Key part of international strategy

The Nordic Council is also keen to point out the importance of continued efforts to remind and inform the public of why it is so vital to continue supporting Ukraine. Although we have a high level of trust in the Nordics, we must be mindful that Russian propaganda is continuously being spread and becoming increasingly noticeable also in the Nordic Region.

Efforts to safeguard democracy, the rule of law, and human rights are key elements in the Nordic Council’s international strategy, which is evident in our strong support for Ukraine,

says the Secretary General of the Nordic Council Kristina Háfoss.

In recent years, the Nordic Council has embarked on several initiatives to support Ukraine. The focus of the Nordic Council’s spring theme session in 2022 was “How can the Nordics help Ukraine” and, together with the Baltic Assembly, a joint meeting was held in that same year to discuss the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Support for Ukraine has also been discussed at the Sessions of the Nordic Council in both 2022 and 2023.
