Four years of war – continued strong Nordic support for Ukraine
“The Nordic Council reiterates its strong condemnation of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. We stand unwaveringly behind Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and its people’s right to determine their own future.
Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine, who during a very harsh winter have been subjected to brutal attacks on civilian infrastructure, exacerbating the humanitarian situation in the country.
For almost 75 years, the Nordic Council has stood up for democracy, international law, human rights, and peace. We express our strongest support for efforts to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. A free, strong, and democratic Ukraine means a stronger Europe.
We emphasise continued co-operation with like-minded countries to support Ukraine. This includes military and economic measures, as well as efforts towards reconstruction. Protecting vital societal functions and strengthening resilience against disinformation are other key elements in achieving overall security in both Ukraine and the Nordic Region.
The Nordic Council will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the Nordic Council has expressed its support for Ukraine. In 2024, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was the guest of honour at the Session of the Nordic Council in Reykjavík. The President of the Nordic Council has met with Ukraine’s Speaker, Ruslan Stefanchuk, and in 2025 Ukraine’s Ambassador to Denmark addressed the Nordic Council in Copenhagen.
