Medicines and reimbursement for medicine expenses in Åland
Persons living in Finland or Åland can get reimbursement from Kela for the cost of medicines, clinical nutritional products and basic emollient creams prescribed for the treatment of an illness. Reimbursement may also be granted if entitlement to healthcare in Finland is provided for under EU legislation or international agreements.
Finland’s regulations on medicines and reimbursement for medicine expenses apply in Åland. Information on , among other things, entitlement to reimbursement for medicine expenses, what to do if you have a prescription issued abroad, and the rules on travelling with medicines can be found on the Info Norden page Medicines and reimbursement for medicine expenses in Finland.
High-cost protection
High-cost protection caps healthcare costs over the course of a calendar year. Once the limit has been reached, no further fees covered by the protection need to be paid for the rest of the year. Patients are responsible for keeping track of their costs, but the Åland Healthcare Service (ÅHS) can provide support with this.
All patients entitled to healthcare in Åland are covered by general high-cost protection of 450 euros. For persons on low taxable incomes, children and young people, and persons who receive social assistance, the threshold is lower or there is no charge. Read more about the high-cost protection in the patient handbook on the ÅHS website.
